Grand Kru crying over Bad Road

Residents of Electoral District #2 in Grand Kru County are calling on the Government of Liberia and the Ministry of Public Works to urgently rehabilitate the road linking Dweaken and Buah Geeken, describing its condition as a major challenge to transportation, trade, and daily life.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with a businesswoman Annie Weah said the road has become nearly impassable, leaving motorcycles as the only reliable means of transportation.

She explained that while commercial vehicles charge around LD$7,500 from Kweaken to Monrovia, motorcyclists charge LD$6,000 just to travel from Kweaken to Buah Geeken because of the poor road conditions.

Residents said several vehicles, including fuel tankers, have become stuck in deep mud, forcing drivers and passengers to use shovels and other tools to free them.

Dweaken Township Commissioner Jackson Nyenneh described the road from Dweaken through Buah Geeken to Barclayville as being in a deplorable state.

He said the poor roads have driven up the prices of essential goods, with a 25kg bag of rice now selling for LD$4,500, while a gallon of fuel costs between LD$1,450 and LD$1,500.

Commissioner Nyenneh blamed the situation on heavy-duty mining equipment and fuel tankers that continue to use the road despite restrictions by the Ministry of Public Works.

He appealed to the government to urgently repair the road, noting that Dweaken and Buah Geeken are important commercial centers but remain difficult to access.

He also raised concerns about poor mobile network services provided by Lonestar Cell MTN and Orange Liberia, saying residents often go for weeks without reliable connectivity, creating additional hardship.

Residents said the worsening road conditions have caused the prices of goods in local markets to increase sharply and are urging their lawmakers, including District #2 Representative J. Fonati Koffa, and the national government to take immediate action.
